Soon, drive on expressways at 120 kmph New Delhi: Vrooom.... yes, the sound of cars driving at high speeds on Indian expressways and highways is all set to become a reality soon. As per a report in The Times of India, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has cleared the proposal to increase speed limit of cars driving on national highways to 100 kilometres per hour, from the existing 80 kmph. The maximum speed limit for cars on expressways has been set at 120 kmph. The report said the increase in speed limits has got a green signal from Minister Nitin Gadkari and notification in this regard will be issued soon. Further, to ensure that safety is not compromised, the ministry has approved the installation of devices like electronic control unit in vehicles that will ensure they do not ply at very high speeds. As per the proposal cleared by the ministry, 80 kmph will be the maximum permissible speed limit for two-wheelers on highways and expressways; 90 kmph for trucks and buses on expressways and 80 kmph on national highways. The state and local authorities including the traffic police have been given the authority to set speed limits for state and local roads.
